A Small Guide About Different Balances in Laboratories

There are different balances that are used differently. Each of the balances has its distinct features and is used in different labs. This article discusses of the most used laboratory balances like analytical balances or top-loading balances.
In any laboratory, balances are important. These balances are used to measure and count items and materials for experiments. There are different balances like analytical balances precision, top-loading balances, etc. These balances have different purposes and are used in differe4nt labs.
These balances have higher degrees of readability and higher accuracy. Therefore, you can get exact results and measurements for performing an experiment. Here are some well-used balances in the laboratories-

Portable Balances
These balances are portable and can be carried easily. These balances are used for fieldwork and other purposes. Portable balances have a user-friendly design and can weigh a large number of samples easily. It offers many features like piece counting, dynamic weighing, unit conversion, etc. These balances have sealed keypads and details steel platforms for easier maintenance.

Analytical balances

Analytical balances are common in life sciences and biological laboratories. This balance is specially designed to resist all the external forces like an air current. It has a glass-
enclosed chamber where samples are kept and weighted. These balances need regular calibration and proper maintenance. Hence, often analytical balances are kept in a different room. This is to ensure that there is no disturbance like foot traffic, chemical spills, flying objects. Vibrations or other disturbances like birds or small animals or air. These balances are sensitive and must be handled carefully. Analytical balances have an antistatic mat inside them. The mat is for higher accuracy. Some analytical machines also come with automatic recalibration for convenience. Analytical measures are best for weighting the smallest amount of samples, unstable samples like liquids, small samples of cells or small insects and animals. This balance offers higher decimal accuracy and also has a better precision rate. Analytical balances should not be kept in a dirty room. This is because dirt and dust can affect the weighing capacity. It also provides facilities like dynamic weighing, counting of unstable and smaller samples, etc.

Top-loading balances
Top-loading balances are used to weight substances where higher precision is not required. For example, if you do not need the upper margin or error to be less than 0.05mg then you can use it. This balance does not offer protection from air currents and can weight in low range.

Microbalances

Microbalances or semi-micro balances are used to weigh even the smallest of samples. It can accurately weigh the 1/100 portion of a milligram. Hence, these special balances are used in case of sensitive experiments or in case of measurement of coating materials, etc.

Here you get an overview about different types of balances and the usage of those. Such balances will help a lot in laboratory works.
